congresswoman michele bachmann has amassed quite a treasure chest for the re-election bid for the house seat there. as of july 25th, bachmann has raised and spent nearly $16 million according to the fcc report reports and that is more of any member of the house, and second to only john boehner, the speaker who has raised $18 million this election cycle. since her election to congress in 2006, the tea party star has been making an aggressive push for more tea party representation in the house. bachmann is now in a very close race with democrat jim graves, her first significant challenger since running for that seat back in 2006. joining me now to talk about it, in minneapolis, jennifer brooks of the "minnesota star tribune." jennif jennifer, good afternoon to you. >> hi. >> and congresswoman bachmann does not have trouble getting people to write cheshgs but there was an internal poll that notes that she has a pretty small lead that is well within the margin of error. why is bachmann facing such a strong challenge there in minnesota? >> well, certainly when the year began we never thought that

. and that explains why, for instance, the koch brothers were early funders of michele bachmann, who is a darling of the religious right. they don't care particularly, i would assume, about her religious foibles. what they care about is the bottom line. and these religious right candidates, many of them believing in the health and wealth, name it and claim it prosperity gospel, believe that the rich are sanctified and the poor punished. >> many of those people on the right would tell you that the fall in the income of middle-class people and others has been because of obama's economic policies. >> i think they're suffering from selective amnesia. they also don't understand that george bush doubled the national debt, that the original meltdown on wall street occurred during george bush's watch, and by the time obama became president in 2009, we were already well into the recession. now i don't defend him in every way. i don't say that everything he's done is right by any means. i have all kinds of issues with him on the health care legislation. for instance, his willingness to play ball with pharm

seats in the house are being challenged. michele bachmann swept into office in 2010 with a 13-point lead. now she's only two points ahead of her opponent. allen west, nine-point lead in 2010 has turned into a statistical dead heat in 2012. congressman steve king held an impressive 33% lead in 2010, is now down to single digits. is this a rejection of their ideas and could lead to the country moving away from this extreme right philosophy in terms of a takeover by politics in washington? >> yes, if as president obama said, because he was right when he said that real power is not here in washington, you don't change washington from the inside, it does mean that people from the outside, it's not just about who gets elected. that's very important. and then people outside of washington have to keep the pressure on their members of congress to hold them accountable for what they said they were going to do. when we've seen people do that over the course of the last couple of years, that's the only time we've actually ever seen congress act that or coming to a fiscal cliff and over a deadline. y
